Environmental Sustainable Design

Project 1: Paying it Forward

For our first ESD project, we are to form a group of 10 and identify an environmental-community related issue in our local community. We are then to explore the issues faced by the community and write up a proposal to tackle the issues identified, applying the sustainable knowledge and solution we had learned during lectures. The site we have selected to execute our project is located in Klang, named as the El Shaddai Refugee Centre. The learning centre is an education hub built to provide

education for the refugees’ children such as those from Pakistan, India, Cambodia, Laos and neighbouring countries. These children are unable to be intergrated into the local school system and are thus educated in this learning centre instead.

We have proposed to convert the neglected backyard of the refugee centre into an organic fruit and vegetable farm.

As these children do not come from well-to-do family, they will use the garden to plant their crops and harvest them as a source of food to lighten the burden of the families. Our group has suggested to clean up, backfill the landfill corner and at the same time, build an outdoor stairs for the yard. We also suggested to incorporate a landscape design for the yard and transform it into a more efficient area for vegetation and fruit planting as it will be fully utilized as a nursery area in the future.

Project Poster

This is a truly enriching and meaningful project as we have understood the responsiblity as a designer towards the community. It also gives us a chance to immerse and engage ourselves with the needy community and learn to understand and sympathize the hardships of refugees. These skills are crucial in developing a  good professional design practice in the future and we also learnt to tackle issues like soil errosion and landfill by coming out with sustainble strategies to resolve these issues.

Project 2: Nature and Us

For our second project, in a group of 2, we are to produce a written report that explores on the environmental issues and also an individual reflective essay upon visitation to the National Park, located at Kuala Tahan, Pahang. My partner and I have chosen the theme: Getting back to nature, getting nature back to delve into how tourism, development and agriculture have affected the environment. In our report, we have explored on the environmental impact of human activities and environmental awareness in relation to our National Park site visit and also solutions and ideas to improve the current built environment.

By the end of this project, I have learnt to appreciate nature more and able to exemplify creativity in attempting to explore the current environmental circumstances. I have also come to recognize the role and responsibility of an architect towards the environment and society
