Architecture Culture & History I

Written report

This project focused on investigating historical works to enrich architectural design and ideas.Through the study of existing buildings, we were able to inform and expand our architectural vocabulary and develop design concepts. My group has decided to study on the Durham Cathedral, United Kingdom.

After doing some research on the building we realised there were a few factors that influenced the architectural design during that period. It was every builder's ideal to build the cathedral as high as they can due to Gothic influence on a building height reflected the glory of God. With the innovation of stone rib-vaulted ceiling and pointed arches, they were able to achieve it.The most interesting part of the cathedral was that it showed the architecture evolution from Norman to Romanesque and slowly to Gothic style.

Culture and history was the most interesting subject to me as we learned buildings of different era and the factors that influenced that particular design. We could not help but marveled at the beauty and brilliance of Architecuture of the past and present.

Presentation Board (precedent study on style and design)- Individual Work
Balsa Wood Model (studies on building structure, style and massing)
Project: Precedent Study

This is my individual presentation board on the study we did on Durham Cathedral. It explained the style and design of the Romanesque-style cathedral. We had a group presentation on the studies we had done later along with the balsa wood cathedral model.
