Project 1: Case Study - Lighting & Acoustics Performance Evaluation and Design

Report

For this project, in groups of seven, we were required to conduct a study on the lighting and acoustic designs of a building. The findings and analysis are to be compiled into a report and two A2 summary boards, one for lighting and one for acoustic. The main objectives of this project is to understand and determined the characteristic of the lighting and acoustic designs and requirements as well as to critically study and analyzed them.

 

The case study building we have chosen is Menara Darussalam, located at Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

Project 2: Integration with Design Studio 5

In this individual project, we were required to integrate what we have learnt in this module into our design studio. We were to choose spaces to conduct lighting and acoustic analysis to show their efficiency. The areas of analysis include day lighting, artificial lighting, PSALI, external noise and internal noise.

Upon successful completion of this project, I have learned to interprate and analyse the site context of the community library in relation to lighting and acoustic analysis. Moreover, I am able to identify and analyse the functional needs of lighting and acoustics requirements through this integration project and produced spaces with good acoustic qualities and lighting with calculations and analysis to support my design intention. 

 

I am able to produce a complete documentation on analysis of space in relation to lighting requirement eg. natural and artificial lighting. (Pictures, sketches and drawing) and analysis of factors which effects the lighting design of a space. I also had the opportunity to explore and apply understanding of building physic eg. Lighting towards building / construction technology and building materials on existing buildings. Besides, I learned to evaluate and explore the improvisation by using current material and technology in relevance to present construction industry, plus a basic understanding of lighting layout arrangements and space acoustical qualities by using certain methods or calculations.
